Say no to flash

Posted May 4th, 2008 in Web Design, Web Standards by Sam

When Flash came along…

FlashMillions and millions of years ago, man created an invisible entity, a power to which the world would kneel down and worship and would change the lives of everyone forever. Some called it the ‘World Wide Web’, but by some it was known only as ‘The Internet’.

In it’s early days of life, the Internet was slow and ugly and rarely reared it’s head in public. But over time it began to grow and flourish. It adopted HTML to promote it’s power and ideas, picked up CSS to fashion it’s wardrobe and used directories and Search Engines for PR. Soon, the Internet had a whole team behind it – a list of acronyms only a madman could contemplate.

But something was missing. There was no movie producer, no director to push the Internet to the big screen. Until Flash came along. Hailed as the saviour, the messiah – the chosen one!

Right I’m going to cut the insane metaphor here. Flash was not a saviour – it simply opened doors, many of which shouldn’t have been opened. It made bad websites worse, and generally made good websites… different.

SIFR-Scalable Inman Flash Replacement. As the meaning of the word suggest it has something to do with the flash and the replacement of something in the web in flash.SIFR enables us to embed the customized fonts into web page by the use of javascript with some special kind of flash.

sIFR (or Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) is created by Mike Davidson. It solves the problem that disappoints of many people when they first start designing websites – browsers only accept a limited number of fonts. Some people try to get around this obstacle by using images for text, but this technique is bad for SEO, invisible to screenreaders and difficult to change. SIFR uses Javascript and Flash to solve all those issues.

However, one thing you need to do is create a special Flash file to hold your font. In this quick tutorial we’ll show you how to use sIFR on your Joomla site in 8 easy steps:

Simple Instructions to Create Cool Font Headings in Joomla.

Designing website layout?

Posted April 5th, 2008 in Tutorials, Web Design by Sam

Designing website does not mean that you should know how to operate PhotoShop or tools like that. It’s more of visualizing the business model, understanding the target market and then relating both of them to envisage theme and then bring it on the canvas. Many times it happens that people start designing a website by just knowing the nature of application to be deployed. For example a garment store looking for an online presence for its business, most of the people will think it like a regular e-commerce store selling garments. With this approach yes for sure a design can be done but will it really attract the customers, maybe and maybe not. The chances of customers not liking it will be more as it’s not designed from the perspective of targeted market rather it is designed from the perspective of an online store. The features and functionality will for sure offer its customers the ease of shopping online, but they will never reach that stage of placing the order as the interface and design of the site is not to cater to there taste. Thus the effort goes waste.

You may use any software for designing a website, but the basis of how the website should look like should depend on: –

- Nature of the business
- Who are the target customers/users
- What targeted market will like
- Why they will stick to the website and revisit
- Opting the color schema to match with the liking of target audience

Apart from look ‘n’ feel of website the user interface also has to be easy to use and should be designed considering the following factors: –

- How internet savvy the users will be
- Steps user will have to follow to perform an activity on the website should include least possible inputs
- Navigation from one section to another should be thru minimal clicks
- If a series of inputs are required from the user, it should work like a wizard to offer support to the user entering these inputs.

Want to hire a Web designer?

Posted November 25th, 2007 in Tutorials, Web Design by Sam

Many online entrepreneurs start with absolutely no money. They have to do everything on their own like work for the preparation of a product, the development of a marketing strategy, the actual building of a website. As their business expands over time, they will find that their simple “homemade” site might not be enough to cover everything, and they will have to take a day or two away to simply dedicate that to the website expansion.

When you hire a web designer to do your job for you, you are doing more than just handing over the “dirty job” to someone else. In fact, by paying a little money, you can let the designer worry about the little annoyances that always evade the main picture and only come haunting when you’re halfway through the job. That way, you will be more focused and have more time to spend on your actual business strategy.

On the other hand, the designers you hire are professionals so they are good at what they do. By outsourcing your web design jobs to them, you won’t have to worry when problems surface because you can always get them to fix it for you. Again, they will be able to pin point the problem and fix it faster than you probably will be able to.

Also, the work you pay for will turn out more professional than what you can achieve because the designers have been doing it longer than you have. After all, they do it for a living so they have to be good!

So, remember to not just work your business, but grow your business too!

When it comes to graphics, most Internet marketers shy away from using graphic templates whether it’s e-book covers, website layouts or promotional banners because they firmly believe that by using graphic templates, they are tarnishing their own business. They want to own a unique identity and hence will always find a professional graphic designer to do the job.

On top of that, you are actually saving a lot of precious time that you can otherwise spend on more important matters like developing new products or market your products. When you buy a pre-made template, you only need to edit a thing or two to give it an identity of your own, and that gives you more time and flexibility to work on other stuff.

Okay, let’s say that hiring a designer to do the job is equally fast. That may be true but don’t forget, hiring a professional designer to do a custom design for you will cost you a lot of money. Unless you need a totally unique identity that you are aiming to establish firmly in your niche market, you don’t need to get a designer to design it for you.

Not all graphic templates are suitable, so you have to be careful when choosing one. Consider quality over the price, and you’re on your way to creating a positive image for your business while saving more time for more productive chores!
