How to determine your need for VPS hosting

Posted July 28th, 2010 in Web Hosting and tagged , , , by Sam

When building your website, you need to examine several critical factors, such as the appearance, the target demographic of your site’s content and the purpose of the website. But there’s one more significant factor – one that’s often overlooked until the end of the project. I’m talking, of course, about the type of hosting plan that you plan to purchase for the site. You may not realize this, but determining the best hosting plan for your website is not always as easy you might think. Certain kinds of dsites may do just fine on a shared hosting plan; however, others may not fare as well since such a site might have features that require more resources than a shared environment can provide.

If that’s the case, then a dedicated server is a good option, but it is not always the best fit for growing websites – especially those operating with a smaller budget. Nowadays, there is a great alternative that you might find quite appealing: VPS web hosting, or Virtual Private Server hosting.

VPS hosting is a good idea for many reason, but especially for the following:

1. You Need Root Access/SSH – This is one of the typical reasons why you should try to get off the shared hosting bandwagon. This could be called “server-level customization,” and no hosting company in their right mind will ever allow you to customize and modify the server on a shared platform. On a VPS, though, you will have the opportunity to customize your own website the way you see fit, since your site is actually separated from the others.

2. You’re Growing/You Need Scalability – For a websites just starting off, shared web hosting is usually good enough. However, since the basic goal of many websites is to grow or improve, by either adding other sites or by increasing traffic, you might just grow too much. Shared hosting can generally only grow so much, while VPS web hosting can provide adequate room and resources for your needs – whether yours is a blog site, portfolio, or an e-commerce hub.

3. You have Unpredictable Traffic Spikes – With a hosting plan that cdoesn’t have the resources to meet your needs, a blogger’s idea of heaven can instantly turn into dark. If you get a link to your site from a much bigger site (like Digg), the inadequacies of your shared server will quickly be evident. On a VPS hosting though, this type of problem is of no concern, since most of them have what you call “burstable memory.” This is basically a pool of memory that can be utilized when necessary, especially during a traffic spike.

4. You’re Using Your Site For E-Commerce – If you’re someone who depends on their website to generate income, it’s not a good idea to depend on shared hosting. If the majority of your income comes from driving a taxi cab for a living, you wouldn’t invest on a rusty old car, would you? No – you’d spend a little more money and get the one that can MAKE you more money.

5. You Have A Budget – VPS web hosting is an attractive alternative not just because of the beautiful things it can offer, but also the price tag that is attached to it, especially when compared with dedicated servers. Now you can get the best features out there without costing you a lot of cash. With this type of web hosting, you’re truly making a good investment.

VPS solutions are not perfect, but they do provide many advantages over a conventional Shared Hosting option. If your website represents your business, it is good for your professional image that that website is available as often as possible, and that it responds in a timely manner and is not associated with sites containing illicit or explicit content. VPS Hosting gives you more control, more power, more reliability.
